Analysis and psychotherapy

The experience of analysis will be different for each person. The regular sessions, in which you speak about whatever comes to your mind, allow us both to engage with the material that emerges. The sessions can be between one and four times a week, ranging from a few sessions of psychotherapy to more intensive analysis over several years. I see adults from any social or cultural background.

Reasons for seeking analysis

There can be a variety of reasons for seeking analysis, including feeling unhappy, confused or in conflict. You may have been distressed through difficulties in personal relationships, or may realise that you are repeating unhelpful patterns and feel unable to prevent this. There may be a sense that life is bleak or that something is missing. You may be suffering from depression, anxiety or other problems. It may be that your difficulties date back to earlier in your life. You may be seeking a development of your potential.

Some people seek analysis in order to pursue professional analytic training. I can act as training analyst for those considering training as a Jungian analyst with the British Jungian Analytic Association, or as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with some psychoanalytic psychotherapy trainings, or as a psychodynamic counsellor/psychotherapist.

Referrals

People usually contact me directly but I am also able take referrals from a doctor or other health professional.

Initial consultation

I offer an initial assessment consultation of one or more sessions. This can clarify your situation and enable a decision to be made about whether or not analysis would be helpful.

The first consultation can be arranged by telephone and will be for an hour and a quarter. Further sessions will be for fifty minutes.

Fees per session space are agreed over the initial consultation and are reviewed annually.

My consulting room is around ten minutesí drive from Newport on the road to Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, with direct buses from Newport and the Lymington ferry. There may be access to my ground floor consulting room for a small wheelchair, but the en-suite toilet is not wheelchair accessible.

Experience

I qualified as a Jungian analyst in 2014 and as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in 1999. My psychotherapy training began in 1984 with a group analysis course and training as a psychodramatist, qualifying in 1988. My private analytical psychotherapy practice began in 1995.

I was employed in the NHS as a psychotherapist on the Isle of Wight from 2002 to 2011, and before that worked in London and Surrey psychotherapy departments, providing individual psychodynamic psychotherapy and group psychotherapy. I worked initially as a psychiatric nurse, in an eating disorders service, and for eighteen years in a therapeutic community for young adults with personality disorders, doing group psychotherapy, psychodrama and working closely with an art therapist in an art work group. I worked in NHS mental health for over thirty years.

Supervision

I trained in supervision with the Society of Analytical Psychology and offer analytic supervision and consultation, which may be by telephone or internet link. My experience includes providing supervision groups and Balint (case-based discussion) groups.
